AI helps zookeepers know when animals are sick or sad.
Zookeepers love animals and watch them every day. AI cameras help by spotting if an animal isn't eating, isn't moving, or seems uncomfortable. Then the zookeeper checks in person.
Pretend you're a zookeeper. What animal would you watch with AI? Why?
A zookeeper cannot watch every animal every minute of the day. Animals sleep when their keepers are off duty. Some health problems in animals show up slowly, over days — small changes in how much they eat, how often they move, or how they behave that are easy to miss in a busy day. AI cameras and sensors fill these gaps. A camera watching a penguin exhibit does not just record video — it counts how many times each penguin swims, notes which ones seem sluggish, and sends an alert if behavior patterns change significantly. AI that listens to elephant sounds can detect distress calls that happen at frequencies humans can barely hear. Sensors in enclosures track temperature, humidity, and feeding patterns and flag when something is off before the animal shows visible signs of illness. The zookeeper is still the expert — they know each animal's personality, history, and preferences in a way no AI does. But AI gives them better information faster, so they can act before a small health issue becomes a serious one.
Zookeepers love animals — but with hundreds of animals, they can't watch every one all the time. AI watches video from the habitats and tells the zookeeper if a tiger is limping or a parrot is acting strange.
Imagine you're a zookeeper. What animal would you want AI to help you watch — and why?
