Context and Clarity: Giving AI Exactly What It Needs, Part 2
Break a giant ask into a stack of small prompts, each feeding into the next.

The big idea
A prompt stack is a sequence of prompts where each one builds on the last. For complex things like writing a paper, you don't ask once — you stack: outline, then sections, then edit.
Some examples
- Step 1: 'Make me an outline.' Step 2: 'Write section 1.' Step 3: 'Now write section 2 in the same voice.'
- Step 1: 'Brainstorm 20 ideas.' Step 2: 'Pick the top 3.' Step 3: 'Develop the winner.'
- Step 1: 'Critique my essay.' Step 2: 'Rewrite based on those critiques.'
- Save your stack as a reusable workflow for next time.
Try it!
Take a multi-step task (essay, project, plan). Break it into a 4-prompt stack. Run them in order and notice the quality.
Practice this safely
Try this with a school, hobby, or family example where the stakes are low. Use the AI output as a draft you can question, not as the final answer.
- 1Ask AI to explain prompt stack in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "Context and Clarity: Giving AI Exactly What It Needs, Part 2" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check prompt structure against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
