Section 1
A test everyone should run
Both ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro cost $20 a month. Both give you the frontier flagship. Both can write, code, analyze images, reason. If you only use one, which one? Most Tendril learners end up preferring one on feel — and that preference is stable. The benchmarks say they are roughly tied. Your brain will not.
Section 2
The personalities differ on purpose
Compare the options
| Trait | Claude Opus 4.7 | GPT-5.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Default tone | Measured, explains its reasoning, hedges carefully | Energetic, confident, more assertive |
| Refusal style | Rarely refuses but adds caveats | Refuses cleanly or complies fully |
| Writing style | Longer, more nuanced prose | Tighter, more action-oriented |
| Computer use | Capable but not headline feature | First-party computer-use and Codex workflows |
| Ecosystem | Artifacts, Projects, Claude Code | ChatGPT Apps, Custom GPTs, Codex, Image 2 |
| Multimodal | Text, vision, code | Text, vision, code, computer-use, image gen |
Try the same prompt on both
- 1Give each model the same 3-paragraph personal essay and ask for critique.
- 2Give each model the same coding bug and ask for a fix.
- 3Give each model the same ethics question and read the whole response.
- 4Notice which one you want to keep reading.
Section 3
Subscriptions are not exclusive
Students often think they have to pick. You do not. Many pros pay for both at $40 a month and use each for its strength. But if you are starting out and paying yourself, here is the cheat sheet.
- Writing-heavy, analytical, long-document work → Claude.
- Quick turnaround, image generation included, voice mode, computer-use agents → GPT.
- Coding with a CLI agent → both work; Claude Code edges out for long refactors, Codex edges out for autonomous PRs.
- You hate refusals → Grok. Neither of these is the answer.
