How AI has changed cyberbullying
Traditional cyberbullying involved real content — screenshots, messages, real photos. AI-enabled harassment uses synthetic content that did not exist: a classmate's face on a nude body, a teacher's voice saying things they never said, a fake social media profile with AI-generated posts designed to damage reputation. The harm to the target is identical — often worse, because the synthetic content feels more real and is harder to prove is fake — but the legal and platform response landscape has not fully caught up.
Types of AI-enabled peer harassment
- Non-consensual synthetic images (deepfake pornography): creating AI-generated sexual images using a real person's face
- Voice cloning harassment: using an AI voice clone of the target to make fake audio recordings
- AI-generated fake screenshots of messages the target never sent
- Fake social media accounts with AI-generated content designed to impersonate or defame the target
- AI-written harassment campaigns: mass-generated negative reviews, comments, or messages
What to do if your child is targeted
- 1Document first: screenshot and save all evidence of the harassment before reporting, in case content is removed
- 2Report to the platform: most major platforms have specific reporting mechanisms for non-consensual synthetic images
- 3Report to the school: if the perpetrator is a classmate, the school has a responsibility to investigate regardless of whether harassment occurred off school platforms
- 4Contact local law enforcement: for synthetic sexual images or credible threats, law enforcement involvement is appropriate
- 5Do not repost or share the content to show others — this further distributes it
- 6Connect your child with a counselor: the emotional impact of targeted synthetic harassment is significant and real, even when the content itself is fake
