Section 1
The big idea
AI is great at jokes — puns, knock-knocks, dad jokes, observational humor. Use them for cards, presentations, or just to crack up friends.
Some examples
- 'Give me 5 puns about pizza for my friend's birthday card.'
- 'Make me 3 jokes I could open my class presentation with.'
- 'Generate 10 dad jokes for my dad on his birthday.'
- 'Make me jokes about my dog (a goldendoodle) being silly.'
Try it!
Get 10 jokes from AI on a topic. Pick the best 2. Use them today.
What makes AI jokes work — and how to get better ones
AI generates jokes by pattern-matching against millions of examples of humor — puns, setups and punchlines, wordplay, absurdist scenarios. It's surprisingly good at this, but it also has quirks. AI tends to over-explain puns (nothing kills a joke like the AI saying 'the humor here comes from the double meaning of...'). It sometimes plays it too safe and produces polite-but-dull humor. And occasionally it completely misses what's funny about a situation. The fix for all three problems is the same: give AI more context and push it harder. Instead of 'tell me a joke,' try 'write 5 very short puns about pasta that would work on a 10-year-old birthday card. Make them groan-worthy.' Specificity and a target audience always improve AI humor. Then you do the curation — pick the best two, cut the rest. You become the comedy editor, which is actually the fun part.
- Specify the format: pun, knock-knock, one-liner, observational — AI writes different styles
- Give a target audience: 'make it work for a 60-year-old dad' gives very different results
- Ask for quantity: request 10 and pick the best 2 — AI output has variable quality
- Avoid over-explanation: tell AI 'don't explain the pun after delivering it'
