The big idea
AI can suggest books, articles, or websites for your topic. The catch: AI sometimes invents sources that do not exist. So you HAVE to check.
Some examples
AI says: 'Try the book 'Volcanoes for Kids' by Jane Smith (2018).' You look it up — does it exist?
AI says: 'Visit the National Geographic Kids volcano page.' Click the link — does it work?
AI says: 'Read this scientific paper from 2022.' Search the paper title — does it come up?
AI sometimes mixes real facts with made-up sources. Always verify.
Try it!
Ask AI for 3 sources on any topic. For each, search the title in Google or a library catalog. How many were real? How many were made up? Sometimes the result will surprise you.

Why can't you always trust sources that an AI suggests?
AI always tells the complete truth about everything
AI only suggests sources from websites you already know
AI sometimes makes up source names that never existed
AI only suggests sources that are on the first page of Google
You ask an AI for a book about sharks, and it suggests 'Sharks of the Deep' by an author you've never heard of. What should you do next?
Assume the book is real because the AI mentioned an author
Search for the book title online to see if it actually exists
Use the suggestion without checking because sharks are a popular topic
Trust the suggestion and borrow the book from the library

Read the source immediately to see if it's good
Copy the source information onto your list
Ask the AI if the source is trustworthy
Check if the source actually exists and can be found
An AI suggests a scientific paper from 2020 about climate change. You search for it and nothing comes up. What should you do?
Ask the AI to describe what the paper says anyway
Don't use that source and look for a different one instead
Assume the paper exists but is hard to find
Use a different search engine and try again tomorrow
Why does the lesson warn that AI 'sometimes mixes real facts with made-up sources'?
Because real facts are always wrong in AI suggestions
Because it can trick you into trusting fake sources by appearing accurate
Because made-up sources are better than real ones
Because AI always makes everything up
You search for three sources AI suggested. Two you can find, but one doesn't exist. What should you do?
Use all three because most are real
Only use the two you can find and skip the fake one
Pretend you found all three
Use the fake one because it had a convincing title
What should you do if an AI suggests a website link but you're not sure if it works?
Ask a friend to click it
Save the link without checking
Click the link to see if it loads
Assume it works because the AI suggested it
Why is checking every single source that AI suggests important?
Because AI always provides perfect sources
Because checking sources is fun
Because some suggested sources are invented and don't exist
Because your teacher will be impressed
Your friend says they used an AI to find sources for their project without checking them. What advice would the lesson want you to give?
Tell them their project will definitely get an A
Tell them they're done faster than you
Tell them AI sources don't need checking
Tell them to check every source the AI suggested
What surprised result might happen when you try the lesson's activity of asking AI for three sources and checking them?
None of the sources will ever be real
All three sources will always be real
Some sources might be made up even if they sound real
The AI will refuse to give you sources
A classmate tells you they found a great article through AI but can't remember where they saw it mentioned. What's wrong with this approach?
They should have read it without taking notes
They should have used a different AI
Nothing is wrong—AI is always accurate
They didn't verify the source exists
What is the 'catch' mentioned in the lesson about AI suggesting sources?
AI can only suggest sources about animals
AI sometimes invents sources that don't exist
AI only suggests sources in other languages

Read both immediately to see if they're interesting
Check if the book and website actually exist
Add them both to your bibliography
Copy the titles into your notebook
