Building a defensible logic model: what AI helps with and what it can inflate
A logic model is a standard tool in grant writing and program evaluation: it maps the inputs (staff, funding, materials), activities (what the program actually does), outputs (immediate measurable results — number of participants trained, sessions delivered), and outcomes (the medium and long-term changes in knowledge, behavior, or condition that the program produces). Funders use the logic model to assess whether the program theory is coherent and whether the outcomes are realistic and measurable. AI is well-positioned to draft the structural scaffolding of a logic model from a program narrative — it can sort elements into the correct columns, suggest measurable indicators for each outcome, and align the language to a specific funder's stated priorities. The significant risk is outcome inflation: AI tends to generate ambitious-sounding outcomes that are difficult to measure and often unrealistic for the proposed program scope. An outcome you cannot measure two years later becomes a reporting failure. The grant writer's role is to resist AI's tendency toward impressive-sounding but vague outcomes and insist on SMART framing: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Stakeholder input — asking program staff and community members what success actually looks like in concrete terms — is essential and cannot be substituted with AI.
