The vision question: what creative directors are actually being evaluated on
Creative Director interviews consistently reveal a split between candidates who can describe their taste and those who can only describe their tools. At the CD level, hiring panels are evaluating vision — how does this person see brand, culture, and creative work differently, and can they articulate that difference compellingly? The questions that separate strong CD candidates are not 'What design software do you use?' but 'Tell me about a creative decision you fought for that the business pushed back on' and 'How do you maintain a creative standard under aggressive timelines?' and 'Describe a time you had to protect a junior designer's work from being changed for bad reasons.' AI can help CD candidates prepare for these questions by simulating the interview environment: given a target company's brand and a candidate's portfolio context, it can generate the six to ten most likely vision and leadership questions and provide feedback on draft answers. The feedback loop — draft an answer, get AI critique, revise — can be run multiple times before the actual interview and surfaces answers that feel less scripted because they have been rehearsed enough to become natural. The irreducible element is that the vision has to be real. AI can help you articulate a vision you genuinely hold, but it cannot give you a vision you don't have.
