The big idea
Top science fairs (ISEF, Regeneron STS, JSHS) explicitly allow AI as a tool but require disclosure of how you used it — same as any other instrument or software. Used right, AI is a 24/7 brainstorming partner; used wrong, it disqualifies your project.
Some examples
- ISEF's 2024 rules require students to list AI tools used in the 'Research Plan' and 'Acknowledgments' — same way you'd cite any software.
- AI is great for: 'help me brainstorm 10 testable hypotheses about X,' 'what statistical test fits this data structure?,' 'explain why my Python plot looks wrong.'
- AI is NOT great for: writing your discussion section, generating fake data, or pretending to be a co-author.
- Use ChatGPT's data-analyst feature (or Claude with code) to upload a CSV of your data and get plots — then verify by replicating the analysis yourself.
