AI as a Body Double for Focus Sessions
Body doubling is a proven ADHD support strategy. AI chats can act as a low-pressure, always-available body double when a human one is not nearby.

What body doubling is
Body doubling means working alongside another person while you each do your own task. The presence of another focused human helps many ADHD brains stay on task. The other person does not need to help. They just need to be there.
Why AI can fill the role
- AI is available at 2 am when no human is
- AI does not judge your task or your pace
- AI does not get bored or annoyed
- AI can match the structure you set
- AI keeps the session contained to a defined window
Setting the session
Define the start time, the duration, and the task. Set a timer outside the chat. Tell the AI what kind of check-in you want. Some people want silence between check-ins. Some want a single line every five minutes. Both are valid.
When AI is not enough
If you have tried AI body doubling for a week and it has not helped, try a video call with a friend, a co-working app like Focusmate, or a public space like a library. Different brains respond to different cues. AI is one option, not the only one.
Key terms in this lesson
Key takeaway: AI body doubling is cheap, available, and judgment-free. It is not a cure. It is a tool you can try tonight.
