Why disclosure is hard
Disclosing a diagnosis can unlock accommodations and stop the masking tax. It can also expose you to bias, fewer promotions, or termination in industries with weak protection. The right answer depends on the role, the manager, the country, and the day.
Levels of disclosure
- 1Full diagnosis to HR for formal accommodations
- 2Diagnosis to a trusted manager privately
- 3Functional disclosure: "I focus better with written instructions" — no diagnosis named
- 4Selective: disclose to peers but not management
- 5No disclosure
Functional disclosure as a middle path
You can request specific accommodations without naming a diagnosis. "I work better with written instructions and a quiet space" is a complete request. Many adults find this gets their needs met without medicalizing the conversation.
