Terms to connect while reading
If your entire product is 'we call GPT-5 with a nice prompt', a better-funded competitor will ship the same thing in a weekend. Teen founders need a real moat, not a wrapper.
Section 1
Moats that actually hold
- Proprietary data: something you collect that competitors structurally can't
- Workflow lock-in: the tool becomes the system of record (Linear, Notion style)
- Distribution: a community, newsletter, or niche brand that costs $ to replicate
- Network effects: the product gets better as more people use it
- Regulatory / integration depth: SOC2, HIPAA, 20 deep integrations
Pick one and commit. Trying to build all five at 16 with a laptop will produce none of them. The biggest moat for a young founder is usually distribution + a tight community.
Compare the options
| NOT a moat | Actual moat |
|---|---|
| 'We use Claude' | Five years of labeled customer data |
| 'Better UI' | Default tool in a specific workflow |
| 'Cheaper' | 25k-person niche newsletter |
| 'First mover' | Integrations nobody else got approved for |
Key terms in this lesson
Good looks like being able to answer 'why can't OpenAI or a YC batch crush you in 3 months?' with one clear sentence that an investor and a user both find believable.

Forget the TikTok hustle videos. A business is a machine that turns work into money, and the machine has parts you can name.
