Pen-and-paper meets a chatbot
Dungeons & Dragons is amazing, but finding a Dungeon Master with time is the hardest part. AI can play that role surprisingly well. It can describe rooms, voice NPCs, and improvise when you do something unexpected — which is what good DMs actually do most of the time.
Setup that makes it work
- 1Use a chatbot with long memory — Claude Projects or ChatGPT Custom GPTs are great
- 2Save the system prompt: "You are an experienced D&D 5e DM. Describe scenes vividly. Voice NPCs. Use 1d20 rolls. Keep us moving."
- 3Decide your character's race, class, and stats in the first message
- 4Roll dice yourself (or use a dice app) — don't let the AI silently fudge

Try it: a one-room dungeon
Tell the AI: "Run a 30-minute one-room D&D adventure. My character is a halfling rogue named Pim. Start with me sneaking into a goblin den. Use real 5e rules." Play it through. Notice when the AI handles things well, and when it forgets stuff.
