Why NPCs were so basic
Old game NPCs followed scripts — "if player walks within 5 feet, say line A; if player attacks, run." That's it. They couldn't really react. The Skyrim guard who said "I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow to the knee" was the same line you heard 50 times for a reason.
What's actually new
- LLM-powered dialogue: NPCs that can chat about anything (Inworld, Convai)
- Smarter enemy pathfinding: bots that flank you instead of running into walls
- Generated quests: missions that adapt to your character
- Voice models that voice-act in real time
