Real artists have always used references — Leonardo da Vinci kept a notebook of weird faces he saw on the street. AI is a new kind of reference machine. The drawing on the page still has to be yours.
Useful art-class moves
- Generate 5 thumbnail compositions for the same idea, pick the best layout, then draw it yourself
- Get a color palette from a mood ("twilight beach, cinematic, 5 colors")
- Reference poses ("a teen running in 3/4 view") — use as reference, don't trace
- Style study: "3 examples of art nouveau line work" then practice the techniques
