Section 1
From survival to thriving
Basic dyslexia tools read text to you. Advanced dyslexia tools let you do EVERYTHING other kids do - just with different tech. College papers, advanced literature, timed tests. The tools in 2026 are good enough to level the playing field.
Advanced reading tools
- Speechify Premium: natural voices, reads anything on your phone
- NaturalReader: even more voice options, great for long content
- Voice Dream Reader: customizes speed, voice, highlighting - popular with dyslexia community
- Helperbird (Chrome extension): reading mode for any webpage, dyslexia-friendly fonts
- Claude + PDF: upload a research paper, ask questions about it
Advanced writing tools
- Dragon Speech-to-Text: pro-grade dictation
- Apple Voice Control: free dictation built into Mac/iPhone
- Grammarly: catches spelling + grammar, dyslexia-friendly
- Co-Writer Universal: predictive text designed for dyslexia
- ChatGPT: explains your writing mistakes without judgment
The speak-then-polish workflow
- 1Talk your rough draft into voice-to-text - say whatever, don't worry about flow
- 2Read the transcript (or have it read to you)
- 3Ask Claude or ChatGPT: 'fix only spelling and grammar, keep all my ideas'
- 4Read the fixed version carefully
- 5Rewrite anything that doesn't sound like you in YOUR voice
- 6Grammarly final pass
Your legal rights (US students)
Under IDEA and Section 504, students with dyslexia can legally get: extra time on tests, audiobooks of assigned reading, spell-check on writing tests, a reader or scribe in some cases. Your school must provide these if you have an IEP or 504 plan. AI tools count as assistive technology and are legally allowed.
The college prep reality
College applications let you disclose disabilities. SAT/ACT have accommodations for dyslexia (extra time, audio versions). Most colleges have disability services that continue your support. Start preparing in high school.
Compare the options
| School tool | College equivalent |
|---|---|
| Read-aloud on Chromebook | Bookshare + Voice Dream |
| Extra time on tests | Extra time continues (with docs) |
| Scribe for essays | Voice-to-text + Grammarly |
| Teacher reads directions | Professor has electronic copies |
The honest-learning note
- GOOD: using AI text-to-speech to read any assigned text
- GOOD: voice-to-text for writing assignments
- GOOD: Grammarly for spelling fixes on writing assignments
- GOOD: AI explains your grammar mistakes
- STILL HONEST: tell your teacher you used assistive tech (they usually already know)
- NOT OK: using AI to write content for you - same rules as any other student
“Being dyslexic, I had to develop my memory a lot, which has helped me in many ways.”
Key terms in this lesson
The big idea: dyslexic students in 2026 have better tools than students in any era before. Text-to-speech and voice-to-text mean you can read and write at your intellectual level, not your decoding level. Use the tools, know your rights, and push hard.
