AI Helps Marine Biologists Study Oceans
How AI helpers help scientists who study sea life.
Explorers · Careers & Pathways · ~3 min read
The big idea
Marine biologists study fish, whales, and coral. AI helpers can find patterns in tons of underwater pictures and sounds.
Some examples
- AI counts fish in coral reef videos.
- AI hears whale songs and tells species apart.
- AI finds places where the water is too warm.
- AI maps where sea turtles like to go.
Try it!
Pick your favorite sea animal. Ask an AI helper one cool fact about it you didn't know.
How AI helps scientists understand what is happening in the ocean
The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth's surface, and we have explored less of it than the surface of the Moon. Marine biologists study animals, plants, and ecosystems in an environment that is dark, cold, vast, and difficult to reach. AI is making ocean science possible at a scale that was unimaginable even ten years ago. Underwater cameras and microphones now stream continuous data — hours and hours of video and audio from coral reefs, open ocean, and deep-sea habitats. A scientist could not watch all that footage in a lifetime; AI can analyze it in hours. AI image recognition counts individual fish in reef videos, identifies species, and tracks population changes over time. AI audio systems identify whale and dolphin calls from hours of underwater recording, mapping where different species are and how their communication patterns change by season. Ocean temperature sensors distributed across the globe feed data into AI models that track the spread of warming water — which is one of the most urgent climate signals scientists monitor. Marine biologists still dive, still collect samples, and still make the scientific judgments that require deep knowledge of ocean ecosystems. AI gives them a way to scale their observations far beyond what a human team could collect.
- AI image recognition counts and identifies species in hours of underwater camera footage
- AI audio analysis identifies whale, dolphin, and fish calls in continuous underwater sound recordings
- AI temperature modeling tracks ocean warming patterns across millions of sensor data points
- AI satellite image analysis monitors coral reef bleaching and sea ice extent at global scale
