Short Questions vs Long Questions
Sometimes a short question gets a great answer. Sometimes you need to write a longer one.
'Capital of France' is a short question that works fine. 'Help me write a story about a dragon' needs more detail.
When long is better
- Writing help
- Brainstorming
- Anything personal to you
Key terms in this lesson
The big idea: Match how long you write to how complicated your question is.
Section 2
Be Specific
Section 3
Be Specific
Generic questions get generic answers. Specific questions get specific help.
'Help me write a story' is generic. 'Help me write a 5-paragraph story about a brave squirrel for 4th grade English' is specific.
Three places to be more specific
- Tell AI what subject the homework is for
- Tell AI how long the answer should be
- Tell AI what format you want
The big idea: Specific questions get useful answers. Take time to ask clearly.
Section 4
Ask for the Format You Want
Section 5
Ask for the Format You Want
AI gives you whatever format it picks unless you say otherwise. You can ask for a list, a paragraph, a story, a song.
Just say at the end: 'as a numbered list' or 'in 3 paragraphs' or 'as a poem.'
Three more formats AI can do
- A poem
- A song
- A story
Here's why "Ask for the Format You Want" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! AI gives you whatever format it picks unless you say otherwise — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "format" means and why it's important
- Learn what "list" means and why it's important
- Learn what "paragraph" means and why it's important
- Learn what "table" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
The big idea: Asking for a specific format gets you exactly what you wanted.
Section 6
Ask AI for Lists
Section 7
Ask AI for Lists
AI is great at making lists — of ideas, things to try, places to go, ways to solve problems.
'Give me 10 things to do on a rainy day.' 'Give me 5 birthday gift ideas for my dad.' AI does it.
Three things to ask for in lists
- A specific number (10 ideas, 5 options)
- Variety (silly, serious, expensive, free)
- Reasons (why each one)
The big idea: Asking for lists gets you many options to choose from.
Section 8
Tell AI How to Format It: Lists, Tables, Songs, Whatever
Section 9
The big idea
AI can change how the answer looks. Lists are great for steps. Tables are great for comparing things. Songs are great when you want to remember stuff. You decide.
Some examples
- 'Make me a numbered list of the planets in order from the sun.'
- 'Make a table comparing dogs and cats: smell, sound, behavior.'
- 'Tell me the water cycle as a short rap.'
- 'Explain photosynthesis like a comic strip in 4 panels.'
Try it!
Pick a topic. Ask AI to explain it as a list. Then a table. Then a poem. Notice how the same info changes shape.
Section 10
Make It Shorter: How to Get a Quick Answer
Section 11
The big idea
By default, AI writes a lot. If you only need a sentence, ask for a sentence. If you want one word, ask for one word.
Some examples
- 'In one sentence, what is the capital of Japan?'
- 'In 10 words or less, why is the sky blue?'
- 'Just give me the answer. No explanation.'
- 'Summarize this in 3 bullet points.'
Try it!
Ask AI to explain volcanoes. Then ask 'Now explain volcanoes in one sentence.' Notice how short and clear it gets.
Section 12
Get AI to Use the Format YOU Want
Section 13
The big idea
AI can give you info in any format. Lists, tables, scripts, recipes, songs. Tell it the format and watch the magic.
Some examples
- 'Make a TABLE comparing dogs vs cats — sound, smell, behavior.'
- 'Write the planets list as a SONG I can remember them by.'
- 'Turn this info into a 4-line POEM.'
- 'Make this a SCRIPT with two characters arguing about it.'
Try it!
Take any topic. Ask AI for the info in 3 different formats. Pick your favorite for your next project.
Section 14
Ask AI to Rank Things for You
Section 15
The big idea
AI can rank almost anything. Books, movies, snacks, ideas — give AI the criteria and it sorts them for you.
Some examples
- 'Rank these 5 movie ideas from coolest to lamest for a 9-year-old.'
- 'Rank top 5 healthy snacks ranked by tastiness.'
- 'Rank 5 study tips by what to try first.'
- 'Rank these characters from my story by interesting-ness.'
Try it!
Pick a decision you have. Ask AI to rank your options. Use the ranking to decide faster.
Here's why "Ask AI to Rank Things for You" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! AI is great at ranking. 'Top 5...' or 'Best to worst...' gives you sorted lists you can act on — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "rankings" means and why it's important
- Learn what "lists" means and why it's important
- Learn what "decisions" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
Section 16
Ask AI for a Shorter Answer
Section 17
The big idea
Sometimes AI loves to talk and gives you a giant essay. You can just say 'shorter please' or 'in one sentence' and it'll trim down the answer.
Some examples
- 'Can you say that in one sentence?'
- 'Give me the short version, please.'
- 'Shrink that to a tweet-sized answer.'
- 'Just tell me the main point in 10 words.'
Try it!
Ask AI 'why is the sky blue?' Then say 'shorter please'. Then say 'shorter again'. See how short you can make it!
Here's why "Ask AI for a Shorter Answer" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! If AI gives you a wall of text, just ask it to shorten the answer — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "length control" means and why it's important
- Learn what "summarizing" means and why it's important
- Learn what "follow-ups" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
Section 18
Ask AI to Give You Choices
Section 19
The big idea
When you want to pick the best one, ask AI for a list — like 'give me 5 ideas'. Then YOU choose your favorite. This is great for brainstorming.
Some examples
- 'Give me 5 silly names for my goldfish.'
- 'List 3 fun science experiments I can do at home.'
- 'Suggest 4 birthday party themes for an 11-year-old.'
- 'Give me 7 good titles for my school project.'
Try it!
Ask AI for 10 names for an imaginary pet dragon. Pick your favorite and say why!
Here's why "Ask AI to Give You Choices" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! Instead of one answer, ask AI for a list of options — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "multiple options" means and why it's important
- Learn what "brainstorming" means and why it's important
- Learn what "lists" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
Section 20
Ask AI for a Checklist
Section 21
The big idea
AI is great at making checklists. You give it a job, and it splits it into little steps. Then you can check each one off as you finish.
Some examples
- Make a checklist for packing my backpack.
- Make a checklist for cleaning my room.
- Make a checklist for a sleepover.
- Make a checklist for a science experiment.
Try it!
Pick a job you do this week. Ask AI to turn it into a checklist with 5 to 8 steps. Print or copy it.
Here's why "Ask AI for a Checklist" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! Turn any task into easy-to-follow boxes you can check off — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "checklist" means and why it's important
- Learn what "steps" means and why it's important
- Learn what "organize" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
Section 22
AI and Asking for Shorter: Telling AI to Wrap It Up
Section 23
The big idea
Sometimes AI gives you a giant wall of words when you only wanted a quick answer. The trick is telling AI exactly how long (or short) you want it to be.
Some examples
- Say 'answer in one sentence'.
- Say 'give me 3 short bullet points'.
- Say 'use 50 words or less'.
- Say 'tell me like I'm in a hurry'.
Try it!
Pick a topic you like. Ask AI to explain it in one sentence. Then ask for the same thing in 3 bullets. Compare!
Here's why "AI and Asking for Shorter: Telling AI to Wrap It Up" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! Learn how to ask AI for short answers when long ones are too much — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "short answers" means and why it's important
- Learn what "length" means and why it's important
- Learn what "clear requests" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
