Why this matters
Everything you type into an AI may be saved on a computer somewhere. Adults at the AI company might read bits of it to improve the system. Other kids or strangers might see it if you share your screen. It is not a private diary.
The never-share list
- Your full name and last name.
- Your home address or school name.
- Your phone number or family phone numbers.
- Your passwords or your parents' passwords.
- Credit card numbers or bank info.
- Photos of your face, your ID, or your home.
- Secrets a friend told you in confidence.
- Anything you'd be embarrassed for a teacher to read.
Compare the options
| OK to type | NEVER type |
|---|---|
| I'm in 4th grade. | My name is Sarah Johnson and I go to Oak Elementary. |
| Help me with a birthday poem for my mom. | My mom's password is ______ so I can log in. |
| I live in a rainy city. | I live at 123 Maple Street, Portland, OR. |
The good version has everything useful and nothing risky.
BAD: Hi! I'm Emma Thompson, 10 years old, at Lincoln Elementary. Can you help me with my math homework?
GOOD: I'm 10 and in 4th grade. Can you help me with a math problem about adding fractions? Some grown-ups teach this rule: 'If you wouldn't put it on a billboard on the highway, don't put it in a prompt.' That's a great rule.
