How to Talk to AI
Talking to AI is like talking to a helpful but not-very-smart friend. Clear words equal clear answers.
If you say 'help' AI gets confused. If you say 'help me with my 4th grade math homework on adding fractions' AI knows what to do.
Three ways to talk to AI clearly
- Tell your age or grade
- Say what subject
- Show what you tried
Key terms in this lesson
The big idea: Clear words to AI get clear answers. Take a few extra seconds to ask well.
Section 2
Being Polite Helps a Little
Section 3
Being Polite Helps a Little
AI gives slightly better answers when you are polite — saying 'please' and 'thank you.'
Why? AI learned from lots of human writing where polite text was usually higher quality.
Three good ways to be polite to AI
- Say please when asking
- Thank AI when it helps
- Don't yell or be mean
The big idea: Politeness to AI is a small win — and a good habit.
Section 4
Use Real Words, Not Slang
Section 5
Use Real Words, Not Slang
AI sometimes gets confused by slang or text-speak. Using real words usually works better.
'Wyd in math homework' might confuse AI. 'What should I do for my math homework' is clearer.
When slang is okay
- When you are asking ABOUT slang ('what does X mean?')
- When AI seems to understand it
- When you are being playful
The big idea: Real words help AI understand you. Slang sometimes works, but real words always do.
Section 6
Tell AI Why You Are Asking
Section 7
Tell AI Why You Are Asking
AI gives better answers when it knows why you are asking, not just what you are asking.
'What is the capital of France?' is fine. But 'I am doing a school project on European capitals — what is the capital of France and what is interesting about it?' gets you more.
Three good context phrases
- 'For a school project on...'
- 'I am trying to understand...'
- 'I need to write about...'
The big idea: Telling AI WHY you are asking gets better answers.
Section 8
Use Real Numbers in Your Prompts
Section 9
The big idea
When you say 'a few ideas' AI might give 3 or 30. When you say '5 ideas' you get exactly 5. Numbers make your prompts cleaner.
Some examples
- 'Give me EXACTLY 5 ideas.'
- 'In 50 words or less.'
- 'List the 3 most important things, ranked from biggest to smallest.'
- 'Make it 2 paragraphs.'
Try it!
Take your last AI question. Add a number to it. Compare answers.
Here's why "Use Real Numbers in Your Prompts" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! Vague prompts get vague answers. Use real numbers — like 'in 50 words' or 'give me 5 ideas.' — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "specifics" means and why it's important
- Learn what "numbers" means and why it's important
- Learn what "constraints" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
Section 10
Tell AI How Old You Are
Section 11
The big idea
AI doesn't know if you're 8 or 80 unless you tell it. Mentioning your age (or grade) helps AI use words you'll understand instead of fancy grown-up ones.
Some examples
- 'Explain black holes for a 10-year-old, please.'
- 'I'm in 5th grade. Help me understand fractions.'
- 'Tell me about World War II in kid-friendly words.'
- 'I'm 8 — what's a polite way to ask my mom for screen time?'
Try it!
Ask AI to explain something hard, like gravity, twice — once with your age and once without. Compare the answers.
Section 12
Be Clear, Not Tricky
Section 13
The big idea
AI does best when your question is clear and direct. Fancy or confusing words can throw it off. Pretend you're explaining to a younger sibling.
Some examples
- Clear: 'Help me think of 3 ideas for my book report.'
- Tricky: 'Bestow upon me bookish thoughts.' (AI may get confused.)
- Clear: 'Make this sentence shorter.'
- Clear: 'Spell-check my paragraph and explain any fixes.'
Try it!
Take a confusing question and rewrite it in the simplest words possible. Ask AI both versions and see which gives a better answer.
Section 14
AI and Fixing Confusion: When AI Doesn't Understand
Section 15
The big idea
Sometimes AI's answer is way off. That usually means the prompt was confusing. The fix? Try saying it a different way, with more details.
Some examples
- Add more details: 'a cat' becomes 'a fluffy orange kitten'.
- Use simpler words.
- Break it into two questions.
- Tell AI 'that is not what I meant — try again with this in mind…'
Try it!
Type a one-word prompt like 'dog'. Now make it better: 'Tell me 3 fun facts about golden retrievers'. Compare answers.
Here's why "AI and Fixing Confusion: When AI Doesn't Understand" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! Learn what to do when AI is confused by your prompt — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "clarify" means and why it's important
- Learn what "rephrase" means and why it's important
- Learn what "specifics" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
Section 16
Tell AI Your Goal First, Not Just a Question
Section 17
The big idea
Instead of just asking 'what's a good name for a dog?', try 'I'm naming a tiny brown puppy and I want a funny name'. The more AI knows about your goal, the better it helps.
Some examples
- 'I'm writing a poster for school. Help me think of...'
- 'I'm picking a book for a 7-year-old who loves dragons. Suggest...'
- 'I'm trying to surprise my mom on her birthday. Help me plan...'
- 'I'm doing a science project on bugs. Tell me about...'
Try it!
Pick a real goal you have today, big or small. Tell AI your goal in one sentence, then ask for help.
Section 18
Don't Give AI Half a Question
Section 19
The big idea
You might be used to typing keywords into Google like 'cat food best.' AI does much better with full questions like 'What's the best food for a 5-year-old indoor cat?'
Some examples
- Bad: 'pizza recipe.'
- Good: 'Easy pizza recipe a 10-year-old can make with help.'
- Bad: 'fix bike.'
- Good: 'My bike chain came off — how do I put it back?'
Try it!
Ask AI a one-word question, then re-ask with a full sentence. Compare answers!
Here's why "Don't Give AI Half a Question" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! AI does WAY better when you give the full question, not just keywords — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "specificity" means and why it's important
- Learn what "full question" means and why it's important
- Learn what "context" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
Section 20
Use Real Numbers — Not 'A Few' or 'Some'
Section 21
The big idea
If you say 'give me some ideas,' AI doesn't know if you want 3 or 30. Say a real number like 'give me 5 ideas' and AI will give you exactly that.
Some examples
- Bad: 'Give me some dog name ideas.'
- Good: 'Give me exactly 7 dog name ideas.'
- Bad: 'Make it shorter.'
- Good: 'Make it 50 words or less.'
Try it!
Ask AI for 'a few jokes,' then ask again for 'exactly 6 jokes.' Spot the difference!
Here's why "Use Real Numbers — Not 'A Few' or 'Some'" matters: The words you type to an AI are called a prompt. Better words = better answers! AI guesses better when you say 'give me 7' instead of 'give me some' — and knowing how to apply this gives you a concrete advantage.
- Learn what "specificity" means and why it's important
- Learn what "numbers" means and why it's important
- Learn what "precision" means and why it's important
- 1Ask AI to explain your favourite animal like you're five
- 2Ask AI to write a haiku about your school day
- 3Ask AI for three ideas for a fun weekend activity
