What Your School Laptop Sees When You Use ChatGPT
GoGuardian, Securly, Lightspeed — your school's monitoring software reads every prompt you type. Knowing what's flagged matters.
Builders · Safety & Governance · ~4 min read
The big idea
If your laptop is school-issued or has school-installed software, every URL, prompt, and file is logged and scanned for flagged keywords. The Center for Democracy & Technology found 88% of U.S. teachers say their school monitors student devices, and AI prompts are now part of the keyword libraries.
Some examples
- GoGuardian's keyword libraries include 'self-harm,' 'weapons,' 'suicide,' and increasingly 'jailbreak' and 'NSFW' — flags can trigger principal alerts and parent calls.
- Securly's AI Aware product specifically logs and analyzes ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini conversations on school devices.
- A 2023 ACLU report found LGBTQ+ students were disproportionately flagged for innocent searches like 'gay teen support group.'
- Even on personal Wi-Fi, school-managed devices route traffic through the school's content filter via VPN — incognito mode does not bypass this.
Try it!
On your school laptop, check System Settings → Profiles (Mac) or Settings → Accounts → Access Work or School (Windows). The list of installed profiles and apps is the list of who's watching.
