Section 1
The big idea
Sometimes you see other kids using AI to bully — making fake images, spreading AI rumors, creating mean content. Speaking up matters. Be the friend who does.
Some examples
- See a fake image being shared? Tell a trusted adult.
- Hear someone planning AI harassment? Speak up.
- See a friend being targeted? Stand with them, document the evidence.
- Speak up even if you are not popular for it. Future you will be proud.

The bystander effect and why you matter
Social psychology research shows that when many people witness a problem, each person is less likely to act — everyone assumes someone else will step in. This is called the bystander effect, and it happens just as much online and in group chats as it does in person. AI-powered bullying — deepfakes, AI-written harassment, fake screenshots — spreads fast and damages the target before most bystanders even decide what to do. The defender who acts first changes the outcome. Defending does not mean confronting the bully directly or putting yourself at risk. It can be as simple as privately messaging the person being targeted to say 'I see what is happening and I'm with you,' or quietly reporting the content to an adult or platform. Documenting evidence (screenshots with timestamps) before it disappears matters too — platforms remove harmful content quickly, and evidence is gone with it. Being the cool defender is not about being the hero of the story. It is about doing the right thing before the moment passes. Future you will respect that choice.
- Message the target privately: 'I see what's happening and I support you'
- Screenshot the harmful content with timestamp before it is deleted
- Report to the platform and to a trusted adult — both matter
- Avoid public callouts that could escalate; work behind the scenes first
