How AI Lives Inside Your Phone Keyboard
Your phone keyboard guesses your next word using AI.
Explorers · Tools Literacy · ~3 min read
The big idea
When you type on a phone, the little word suggestions above the keys come from AI. It guesses what word you might type next. The more you use it, the more it learns YOUR style.
Some examples
- Type 'I love' and the keyboard might suggest 'you' or 'pizza'.
- Auto-correct uses AI to fix typos.
- Smart keyboards learn your favorite emojis.
- They also learn names of friends you text often.
Try it!
On a phone (with grown-up's permission), tap the suggested words again and again to make a silly sentence. See what crazy thing the AI builds!

Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about smart keyboards, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain smart keyboards in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "How AI Lives Inside Your Phone Keyboard" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check predictive text against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
