Why Every AI Agent Needs a Big Red Stop Button
Agents can keep going forever — the stop button keeps them safe.

The big idea
AI agents are eager helpers. So eager that without a stop button, they might keep working long after the job is done. A 'stop' command is super important.
Some examples
- You ask AI to write a song; it writes 100 verses without stopping!
- An agent looking for cat pictures might never run out.
- A 'stop after 5 tries' rule keeps an agent from looping forever.
- Grown-ups always set limits before letting an agent run.
Try it!
Ask AI: 'Give me jokes — but stop after 3.' Did it stop? Try again with 'stop after 7'.
Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about safety, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain safety in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "Why Every AI Agent Needs a Big Red Stop Button" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check stopping against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
