AI and What to Do When It Says Something Scary
If AI shows or says something that scares you, close it and tell a grown-up right away.
Explorers · Safety & Governance · ~4 min read
The big idea
AI sometimes makes mistakes and says things that are scary or wrong — that's not your fault, and a grown-up can help.
Some examples
- Close the chat or app if something upsets you.
- Tell a parent, teacher, or trusted adult — even if you're worried about being in trouble.
- Take a break and do something fun — your brain deserves a reset.
Try it!
Pick one trusted grown-up right now you'd tell. Say their name out loud.
Three Steps When AI Says Something Scary
Sometimes AI chatbots say things that feel frightening, confusing, or just plain wrong. Maybe it wrote something violent. Maybe it said something that made your stomach feel bad. Maybe it brought up a topic you did not expect. This does not mean you did anything wrong — sometimes AI surprises people. What matters most is what you do next.
- Step 1 — Stop: Close the app or tab. You do not have to keep reading.
- Step 2 — Breathe: Take a slow breath. You are safe.
- Step 3 — Tell a grown-up: Find a parent, teacher, or other trusted adult and show them what happened.
It can feel embarrassing to tell an adult that you saw something scary online. But grown-ups want to know so they can help. They have seen scary things too, and they know that the internet — including AI — does not always behave perfectly. Telling someone is brave, not babyish.
