How to Be Safer Online When AI Is Everywhere
AI is in apps, websites, and ads. Here are simple rules to stay safer.
Explorers · Safety & Governance · ~4 min read
The big idea
AI is in almost every app and website now. That brings new risks but the basic safety rules still work. Here are the ones that matter most.
Some examples
- Never share full name, address, school name, or phone number with any AI app.
- Be picky about what photos you upload — they may be saved forever.
- Tell a grown-up if any app or chat makes you feel weird.
- Use strong passwords and never share them with AI (or anyone).
Try it!
Pick one AI app you use. Check what info you have shared. Decide if you are okay with all of it.

Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about online safety, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain online safety in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "How to Be Safer Online When AI Is Everywhere" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check AI everywhere against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
