Talking to a Chatbot for the Very First Time
Your first chat with an AI helper — what to type, what to expect, and what to do if it acts weird.
Explorers · AI Foundations · ~4 min read
Hi there, AI
A chatbot is a computer that types back to you when you type to it. It is not alive. It is not magic. But it can be a really fun helper if you know how to chat with it.
Three things to try first
- 1Say hi and ask the AI to introduce itself.
- 2Ask a question you already know the answer to (like the capital of France).
- 3Ask it to make up a silly story about your favorite animal.
What to do if it gets weird
Sometimes the AI will say something that does not make sense. That is normal. You can type "Try again, please" or just ask a different question. You are the boss of the chat.
Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about first prompt, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain first prompt in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "Talking to a Chatbot for the Very First Time" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check chatbot basics against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
