Section 1
The big idea
When AI writes a sentence, it isn't really thinking. It's guessing the most likely next word, again and again, super fast. That's how it sounds smart.
Some examples
- If you start typing 'happy birth—', AI predicts 'birthday' next.
- Weather AI predicts tomorrow's rain by looking at past weather.
- YouTube AI predicts what video you'll watch next.
- A chess AI predicts which move will win in a few turns.
Try it!
Try this with a friend: say 'Once upon a' and see if they predict 'time'. You just played the AI prediction game!

Section 3
The big idea
AI doesn't actually 'think' like you do. It looks at the words so far and guesses the most likely next word — then guesses the next, and the next, until it makes a whole answer.
Some examples
- If you type 'Once upon a...', AI will probably guess 'time'.
- If you type 'Roses are red, violets are...', AI will guess 'blue'.
- Sometimes the most likely word is wrong, which causes mistakes.
- This is why AI sounds so smooth — it's predicting word patterns.
Try it!
Start a sentence and stop in the middle, like 'My favorite ice cream flavor is...' Let AI finish it. Did it guess what you would?

Why AI Is Always Playing a Prediction Game
Section 5
The big idea
At its heart, most AI is playing a guessing game: 'What comes next?' Next word in a sentence, next pixel in a picture, next note in a song. It guesses based on patterns it has seen.
Some examples
- Phone keyboards guessing the next word you'll type.
- AI finishing a song melody you started humming.
- Drawing apps suggesting the next stroke for your picture.
- Story helpers guessing the next sentence in your tale.
Try it!
Say only the start of a sentence, like 'On a sunny day, I love to ___.' Ask three friends to guess your ending. That's what AI does, but with billions of examples.
Section 6
How AI Plays the 'Guess the Next Word' Game
Section 7
The big idea
At its heart, AI is playing one game over and over: guess the next word. It picks the most likely word, then guesses again.
Some examples
- If you type 'Once upon a ___', AI guesses 'time' is most likely.
- AI looks at the whole sentence so far before guessing.
- Sometimes AI picks the second-best word to be more creative.
- One whole essay is just thousands of next-word guesses in a row.
Try it!
Play the next-word game with a friend! Say 'The dog ran into the ___' and take turns guessing. That's the same game AI plays!

AI Knows About Words, Not About Truth
AI is great at putting words together that sound right. But it does not actually know if what it says is TRUE. Big difference.
