Why a Bigger AI Isn't Always a Smarter AI
Some giant AI models are slow and overkill — smaller AI can be faster and just as good.
Explorers · AI Foundations · ~4 min read
The big idea
Bigger AI models know more but are slower and use more energy. For simple jobs, a small AI can do just as well, way faster.
Some examples
- A tiny AI on your phone can answer 'set timer for 5 minutes' in a flash.
- A giant AI might take 10 seconds to answer the same question.
- Small AI uses less battery and electricity.
- Big AI is best for hard jobs like writing a long report.
Try it!
Notice when Siri or Alexa answers super fast — that's a small AI! When ChatGPT thinks for a few seconds, that's a big one.

Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about model size, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain model size in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "Why a Bigger AI Isn't Always a Smarter AI" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check speed against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
