Lesson 1137 of 1169
AI and Being Kind Online
Use AI to be kind, not to be mean to people.
Explorers · Ethics & Society · ~3 min read
The big idea
AI can write words really fast, so it can also write mean words really fast. Using AI to tease, trick, or bully someone is just as wrong as doing it yourself. The kindness rule from the playground works online too.
Some examples
- Don't ask AI to make a mean nickname for a classmate.
- Don't make a fake message that makes a friend look bad.
- Do ask AI to help you write a thank-you note.
- Do use AI to draft a kind message to someone having a hard day.
Try it!
Ask AI to help you write a friendly note to someone in your class you don't usually talk to. Then share it (or just feel good that you wrote it!).
Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about kind, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain kind in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "AI and Being Kind Online" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check respect against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
