AI and Pretending to Be Someone: Why That's Not Okay
Find out why using AI to pretend to be someone real is not cool.
Explorers · Ethics & Society · ~16 min read
The big idea
AI can copy how a real person talks or sounds. But pretending to BE a real person — like a friend or teacher — to trick others is not okay. It's like wearing a mask to fool people.
Some examples
- Don't make AI write messages 'from' your mom or teacher.
- Don't use voice AI to copy a friend's voice without asking.
- Made-up characters? Totally fine to play with.
- If someone uses AI to fake you, tell a grown-up.
Try it!
Make up a brand-new fictional character. Ask AI to write a message from THAT character. That's the safe way to play.
Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about impersonation, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain impersonation in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "AI and Pretending to Be Someone: Why That's Not Okay" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check honesty against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
