Where AI Learned: It Read Other People's Stuff
AI learned by reading books, websites, and articles — usually without asking the people who wrote them. That is a real ethical issue.

The big idea
Every AI you use learned from other people's writing, art, music, and code. Mostly the AI companies did not ask permission. The original creators did not get paid. That is a real ethical issue people are still working out.
Some examples
- Image AI learned from millions of artists' work — no permission, no pay.
- Code AI learned from open-source code — some allowed, some debated.
- Chatbot AI learned from books, articles, websites — most without permission.
- Music AI learned from songs — many artists are upset about it.
Try it!
Talk to a parent about this. What do you think — is it fair? What would make it more fair?

Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about training data, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain training data in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "Where AI Learned: It Read Other People's Stuff" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check consent against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
