Lesson 467 of 1169
Should You Say Please and Thank You to AI?
AI doesn't need thanks, but being polite to AI is good practice for being polite to people.
Explorers · Ethics & Society · ~3 min read
The big idea
AI doesn't have feelings, so it doesn't care if you say 'please'. But the way you talk to AI can become a habit — and we want kind habits, not rude ones.
Some examples
- Saying 'please explain' is a nice habit, even if AI doesn't notice.
- Yelling at AI when it's wrong won't help, but breathing and trying again will.
- Some people find polite prompts get slightly better answers.
- How you treat AI shapes how you treat people who help you.
Try it!
Try saying 'please' and 'thank you' to AI for a whole day. Notice how it makes YOU feel.

Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about habits, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain habits in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "Should You Say Please and Thank You to AI?" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check politeness against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
