When Is It Fair to Use AI
Some places it is fair to use AI for help. Other places it is cheating. Knowing the difference matters.
If you are supposed to be PRACTICING something (like spelling or math), using AI to do it for you skips the learning.
Three places using AI is usually unfair
- Doing homework you are supposed to think about
- Taking a test
- Anything where YOUR thinking is what is being checked
Key terms in this lesson
The big idea: AI is great for help — and unfair when YOU are supposed to do the thinking.
Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about integrity, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain integrity in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "When Is It Fair to Use AI?" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check plagiarism against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
