AI and the Truth
AI doesn't always tell the truth. Sometimes it makes things up that sound true. Other times it tells biased versions of true things.
The truth is something AI helps with — not something AI guarantees.
Three things AI does poorly with truth
- Recent events (cutoff dates)
- Specific quotes (often invented)
- Niche topics (limited training data)
Key terms in this lesson
The big idea: AI helps with truth — but isn't always truthful itself. Verify important things.
Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about truth, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain truth in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "AI and the Truth" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check fact against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
