It Feels Like a Friend, But It Is Not
When you chat with an AI, it feels like talking to a friend who never gets tired. That is cool. But there is one big difference. A friend keeps your secrets. An AI is a computer program run by a company. Your chat might be stored, read by people training the model, or even used to make future AI better.
The never-share list
- Your full real name
- Your home address
- The name of your school
- Your phone number
- Your parents' phone numbers
- Passwords or secret codes (never, ever)
- Photos of yourself that show your face AND your school or address
- Your birthday with the year
- Credit card or bank info (yours or your parents')
Why it matters
It is not that a robot is coming to find you. The real risk is bigger and quieter. If a bad person hacks an AI company, they get everything everyone ever typed. And when you are older, the stuff you typed at age 10 might still be on some computer somewhere.
What is fine to share
- Your ideas, questions, and homework topics
- Stuff you are curious about
- A first name or nickname if you have to
- Your grade level or general age range
- Your hobbies and favorite subjects
If you make a mistake
- 1Do not panic. Most chats are never read by anyone.
- 2Check if the app has a delete chat button and use it.
- 3Tell a parent so they can help you check the settings.
- 4Use a different name, hobby, or fake city next time.
“If you would not put it on a poster in the cafeteria, do not put it in a chatbot.”
Key terms in this lesson
The big idea: AI chat feels private but is not. Keep your real info to yourself. You can have fun with AI and still stay safe — the two go together.
