Lesson 241 of 1169
If AI Made the Picture, Is It Really Yours?
When AI helps you make art, it is not 100% yours. It is also not 100% AI's. The honest answer is: it is shared.

The big idea
If you typed a prompt and AI drew the picture, who made it? Both of you, kind of. You had the idea. AI did the drawing. Honest people say so when they share AI art.
Some examples
- Honest: 'Look at this dragon picture I made with AI!'
- Not honest: 'Look at this dragon I drew!' (when AI did it)
- Honest: 'I wrote the prompt and AI made the art.'
- Honest: 'AI helped me with this — here is what I changed.'
Try it!
Make a picture with AI. Then write a one-sentence honest description: 'I had the idea ___ and AI made the picture.' Practice being honest about it.

Practice this safely
Try this with a low-stakes example and a trusted adult nearby. The goal is to notice how AI talks about AI art, not to let it make the decision for you.
- 1Ask AI to explain AI art in plain language, then underline anything that sounds uncertain or too broad.
- 2Give it one detail from "If AI Made the Picture, Is It Really Yours?" and ask for two possible next steps plus one reason each step might be wrong.
- 3Check credit against a trusted source, teacher, adult, expert, or original document before you use it.
